Everybody Hurts ~ R.E.M.

EVERYBODY HURTS

When your day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,

When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on

Don't let yourself go,

'cause everybody cries n everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along

When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)

If you feel like letting go, (hold on)

If you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends

Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no.

Don't throw your hand

If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,

When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,

Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes

And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on

Everybody hurts. You are not alone

Edward Munch : The Scream (1893)

R.E.M. is a wonderful American rock band formed by Michael Stipe (singer), Peter Buck (guitarist), Mike Mills (bassist) and Bill Berry (drummer) in 1980. They have produced hauntingly beautiful albums like Document in later 1980s, with politically defiant tracks during the conservative Reagen era and Out Of Time in  mid 1990s, which contained the hypnotising track Losing My Religion. This particular track Everybody Hurts is from the album Automatic For The People, which was released during the early 1990s. Many critics consider Automatic For The People to be the best album of the band. R.E.M. would continue to reverberate in the hearts of the music lovers for times to come, as they pioneered the altenative rock genre with its 'plageant guitar chimes, folk-styled vocals, mystical awe and blissed-out surrender', as the music critic Seymond Reynolds had put it. R.E.M. is one of the few rock bands which is my personal favourite. They artistically reflected the predicament of our contemporary era with all its agonies, ecstasies and anguish in haunting rock music. A few days ago, during the last fortnight of September 2011, the band called it a day, by stating that, all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way!

Au Revoir, R.E.M.!!

  1. All things must end. Hurts and cries too. Therefore we must hold on. Very beautiful lines. Full of zest for life. Excellent rendition too. It's a good post.

  2. During moments of intense melancholy, if we listen to this song, it gives immense solace. It is uplifting the mind and is enlivening the anguished heart. The voice of the singer touches the deeper chords of my being and envelops me with lots of consolation and care. Strangely beautiful!

  3. Everybody Hurts is a beautiful song that soothens a hurt soul with both it's melody and lyrics. It has a balming effect and in a melancholic mood it makes you serene.. This song has been rendered by many artists after REM and the first time I happened to listen to it was while listening to The Corrs in their album 'Unplugged'. The song had a mesmerizing effect on me by the way it was sung in the beautiful voice of the lovely Andrea Corr and to listen to it after a long time in the original rendition of REM has been truly a rewarding experience.

    Thanks for the posting!
