Joan Didion : We tell ourselves stories in order to live..

Joan Didion (Born : 1934)

The younger Joan

Joan, aged 76, is currently living in California

We are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind’s door at 4 am of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends. We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We tell ourselves stories in order to live..

~ Joan Didion

  1. Some people ripe beautifully wiser with age. And it shows on their face. Joan Didion, about whom I've never heard of, seems to be one.

These lines of hers have been reverberating inside me ever since I had read it in your blog. But how to make amends of relationships that had gone sour? How to welcome them with a warm embrace rather than allowing them to hammer on the mind's door at the wee hours of the dawn?

  2. Oh! How difficult infact impossible it is to nod when you feel like punching the other in the face. However, it is our fate to remain in constant conflict by masking our responses. There is no way out. We must resign here and now to let the secret hand of destiny guide us. There is no pessimism here. Such resignation would be one of highest degree of optimism showing full faith in HIM.
